Joan H. Wilson

A wake, celebrating her life, will be held on Thursday, January 17, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm with a service at 7:30 pm at Forest Lawn Funeral Home South in Davie. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, January 18, at St. David Catholic Church in Davie.

Joan was born in Albany, New York to Bernard and Marcella Hyde on June 5, 1950. She and her eight siblings attended Holy Family Catholic School in North Miami. She graduated from Monsignor Pace High School in Opa-locka in 1968.

She began her career with Southern Bell in 1968 as a service representative for business accounts. She later became a manager in the coin phone division, and was promoted to residence staff in 1978. It was at work that she met her future husband, Jay Wilson. They were married in 1976. She left work in 1980 to raise her children. As her own children grew older, she began working as a caretaker for the children of her church, her neighborhood, and her extended family.

Joan was a devoted wife and loving mother, sister, aunt, godmother, cousin, and friend. She loved watching old movies, talking with her sisters on the phone and attending University of Miami football games with her husband and children.

Joan is preceded in death by her parents and her brother John Hyde. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Jay, her sons Jim (daughter in law, Maggie) and Bill, and her daughter Cathy. She also leaves her dear siblings Bernard Hyde (Nancy), Thomas Hyde (Christine), Nancy Juriga (Laurence), Mary Ellen Ross (Samuel), Dennis Hyde (June), James Hyde, and Kathleen Hyde.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. David Catholic School, Davie, FL.

The Wilson family extends their gratitude to the doctors and support staff at the Moffett Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida whose exemplary care gave us two more precious years with our Joan. The family would also like to thank the doctors and staff of VITAS Hospice Care for their kind attention to Joan in her final days. Finally, Jay, Jim, Bill and Cathy want to thank Joan’s selfless siblings for their unceasing love and support through this most challenging time.
