Gregory’s impact reaches far and wide.  It’s been a year and I’m in India right now.  Days before an email about his anniversary appeared in my inbox, as I sat in my living room, I wondered about his wife and kids.  

You know that someone has made an impression on you when over the course of time, you think of them and their family. 

Miriam — I appreciate your note about you and Gregory not liking the taste of milk.  And just expounding on a memory.  

One other thing I recall about Gregory was how calm and soft-spoken he was.

As the clock strikes midnight, it will be, what would have been your 39th birthday.  We have lost so much, since you departed us. You have missed so much here on earth as well…Halloween, Thanksgiving, birthdays, the holidays, and more in between.  The only comfort I find in your passing, is knowing that you’re resting easy.  I love and miss you, my brother.  The new year doesn’t mean we’re closing a chapter and opening a new one without you; you will be in every chapter to come.  All I (we) can do, is continue to learn to live with the pain.  I’m not sure that “the new year” will ever be a “happy” new year.  Your birthday falls on new year’s day and, it’s only another reminder that you’re gone.  On January 1st, our family will celebrate your life and we will honor you for always, by living the best we can.  My gift to you, for your birthday, is the gift that will keep giving…I have created a non profit organization in your name.  Your name will be known and, you my brother, Gregory, will never be forgotten. I feel so blessed that your last words to me, and mine to you, were “I love you.” I will cherish that forever!!! Easter Sunday 2023, with you Greg.  I wake up thinking of you and I go to sleep, thinking of you. Sometimes, I cry and other times I smile.  I wish you were here. Missing you like crazy and although I’ve taken a few strides, it will never be the same without you.  I love you, your big sister, Miriam.

I am so sorry for your loss.  Gregory was a wonderful guy to work with. He was affable and easy to talk to, which made sitting post a breeze. 

We talked about our ties to Cuba ( mine by proxy as my great-grandfather moved from China to Cuba and is buried there), the Sunshine state and alligators. 

Not being from Florida, Gregory gave me two pointers about alligators: (1) never drive over one; and (2) if pursued,  always run in a zig zag, never in a straight line. 

I remember the time when Gregory inadvertently backed a cruiser into a wedge barrier.   It absolutely was not his fault.  The look on his face when he alighted from the cruiser to check the damage to the car was priceless.  (Gregory, I am grateful that you did that; that cruiser was nasty, gross & beat up. You did me — and the branch — a huge favor by putting that thing out of commission).  

One day, so many years ago, while at the EEOB break room, I saw him eating cereal with a spoon. Without milk. I asked why that was and he said something to the effect that Ike’s (the cafe) didn’t sell the type of milk he liked (?) (or something like that).  Nevertheless, his eating cereal with a spoon without milk struck me.  

My sincere condolences to the Ortiz family.  He was a terrific colleague.

Brent we are so sorry for your loss. Days will be long and sad but soon your tears will change to a smile when you think of your brother. God bless you all.

My sincere condolences for the entire family.  An immeasurable loss.  I fondly remember the love and warmth Miri always had her for all of children.  A home full of love.  We had the pleasure of knowing Gregory when he was a child.  May he rest in eternal peace and may God bless you all.

You led a life of public service and in that life, you made a positive difference in the lives of others especially your colleagues. I will miss you my friend & colleague.

Our trip to the Dominican Republic. I wish we had taken more vacations together.  I love you, Gregory, eternally.  I wish I was going to wake up from this nightmare.  At times, it doesn’t feel real. But I’m certain it’s the mind’s way of trying to heal from the daily pain in my heart.  I keep you now in my heart and, I hope you can strengthen it, so that one day, I can find peace from this tragedy.  I love you and miss you so much! Your big sister, Miriam
