Born on June 18, 1920, in Phenix, VA, Emily was the daughter of the late Frank and Nancy Keyes Ryburn. After high school Emily attended Flora McDonald College in Red Springs, NC, from 1937 – 1941 where she majored in Elementary Education with a minor in History. Emily’s first teaching job was teaching 6th grade in Eastern, North Carolina. Much to her delight Emily was offered a position at the elementary school where she attended as a child, where some of her own teachers were still teaching. In 1949, Emily was united in marriage to Zane Sloter. They were a good match and enjoyed the journey together until his passing in 1976. In 1957 the couple relocated to South Florida and settled in Hialeah, Florida. Emily was blessed and began a teaching position for the next 29 years, teaching at Palm Springs Elementary School. Emily retired from teaching in 1986. Emily loved and cared for hundreds of children. She embodied Aristotle’s quote “Those who educate children well are more to be honored than they who produce them; for these only gave them life, those the art of living well”.
Emily is survived by her brothers, Sam Ryburn and Frank Ryburn, her sister, Jean Ryburn, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews.
Emily’s funeral service will commence on Friday afternoon at 3:00 at the Covenant Village, 9211 W. Broward Blvd, Fort Lauderdale 33324. Burial will take place in Vista Memorial Gardens at the convenience of the family.
