Dr. Murray Miller was a man of towering accomplishments and brilliance who was also a loving father, dedicated husband and adoring and adored grandfather. He was a pioneer in his field of audiology and speech pathology, blazing the trail that created the new field of industrial hearing conservation. He was an admired and accomplished professor and retired from NYU as Professor Emeritus of Audiology and Speech Pathology, and he was also named Professor of the Year. He spoke frequently and was widely published as an expert in his field, authoring five books and over 120 articles in peer-reviewed journals, plus many monographs and chapters in widely used audiology textbooks.
He directed programs in Communication Disorders at some of the nation’s leading medical and academic institutions and spent over 40 years as the Chief Audiological Consultant to the New York City Department of Health. Dr. Miller’s pioneering work was sought after, and he traveled extensively to bring new programs to universities and hospitals across the globe.
He was consulted by some of the top companies in the US for his expertise. And during the prime of his career, he was featured in the media on topics related to hearing loss and hearing conservation.
He was honored throughout his career by the organizations he was affiliated with. The last official honor he received was the “Honors of the association” by ASHA, the highest level of recognition by that important organization.
Because of his work, countless people around the world were able to hear the words of their loved ones, from their loved ones.
Dr. Miller loved language and was a brilliant public speaker. He valued the power of words and labored with love over every word he wrote. And he was still writing late in his life, in his 80s.
He felt his passions deeply: for his faith, for his family, for his field. He had enough substance for two or three people. His sense of humor – famous for his puns – was unmatched. He was a great storyteller who admired anyone who could tell great stories. And he adored music and followed his favorite cantors like the devoted fan he was.
And he was loving. He adored his wife with the excitement of young love. He loved his children and took great pride in their accomplishments, and he was devoted to his grandchildren. He would greet his grandchildren at the door of his home with an old joke and a few hard candies.
Sitting around his dining room table, he was often spontaneously inspired to say, “I’m surrounded by beautiful people.” Dr. Miller is survived by them: wife, Anita, his children, Wendy and Laurence and his grandchildren Matthew, Olivia, Gillian and Naomi.
A graveside service for Maurice will be held Wednesday, January 13, 2021 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at New Montefiore Cemetery, 1180 Wellwood Avenue, West Babylon, NY 11704.
