Marvin Elliott Newman, 95, of Jersey City, New Jersey passed away on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at his home with his beloved wife of 40 years, Brigitte, by his side. Marvin is survived by his children Nadja and Harrison and his 3 grandchildren Sarah, Samuel, and Ruth who loved him so much.
Marvin was a native New Yorker who was born 12/5/1927 and raised in the Bronx with his father Irving, mother Mary, and sister Suzanne. He attended Brooklyn College, where he was a collegiate athlete in track and field as well as football. He went on to graduate from the Illinois Institute of Technology with a Master of Science in Photography.
Marvin's passion and profession was photography. He studied under photographic greats such as his mentor and dear friend the late Harry Callahan. Marvin was part of the Photo League and always sought to address and highlight social causes through his photography. Marvin worked as a head photographer for many publications including Sports Illustrated, Life, Look, Smithsonian, and Newsweek magazines covering events and personalities from the Yankees and Muhammad Ali to the funeral of JFK and the Yom Kippur War. Marvin's photographs are in the collections at the Art institute of Chicago, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The International Center for Photography, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art. In 2017, Taschen Publishing released a major career retrospective of Marvin's life work.
Marvin was a past president of the American Society of Media Photographers, a recipient of the Art Directors Gold Medal for Editorial Photography, and in 2009 received a Lucie Award for a Lifetime Achievement in Sports Photography. Marvin's photograph of Bill Mazeroski's 1960 Game 7 walk off home run was named by Sports Illustrated as one of the 100 Greatest Sports Photos of All-Time and his photograph of the TCU locker room before the 1957 Cotton Bowl was named Sports Illustrated's favorite of the Century's Greatest Sports Photos.
Always innovating, he was a pioneer in color photography in sports and continued adapting to the changing photographic landscape moving to digital media later in his career. Thoroughly embracing advances in photography he was always adamant that despite changes in the field, the person behind the lens was the artist and creator. He worked with his photographic archive and gallery closely until his passing.
Marvin will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A funeral service for Marvin will be held Sunday, September 17, 2023 at 11:30 AM at Schwartz Brothers-Jeffer Memorial Chapels, 114-03 Queens Blvd, Forest Hills, NY 11375, followed by a committal service at Mount Lebanon Cemetery.
