Chuck was born in Los Angeles, CA on February 24,1949 to Sidney and Ernestine Elster. He had two brothers, Steven and Donald, both of which are still residing in California.
He bravely left his family behind and moved to New York in his late teens to start a new and exciting life in the big city and eventually secured a career as a Technician at Verizon where he retired after 47 years of service.
Chuck was a kind, gentle man and a devoted husband and friend to many. He married his best friend, Terry, in August 2010 and together they devoted their time pursuing their passion for animal rescue and forming a charitable 501c organization, Hands Saving Paws, where they have helped hundreds of animals in need. They created a local “Meals on Wheels” for stray cats, caring for over 175 strays living in surrounding areas in Queens, New York providing food and shelter.
Chuck loved the beach, any time the sun was shining on a summer day, you could count on him to find his way to Robert Moses on Long Island to spend time with his friends. He was part of a special community where he built friendships with others who shared his love of the sand and sea.
Chuck was an avid traveler and has been to many places across the globe from Africa, Europe, Costa Rica and many other destinations that piqued his interest. He enjoyed nature, cities, beaches and ruins alike. He studied photography and acquired a deep passion to view the world through his lens. He was a skilled photographer.
Chuck’s other hobbies included collecting model cars. He loved cars, mostly classic cars but he also liked fast cars. He was a big fan of all types of music including orchestra, concerts and musical theatre. He particularly enjoyed spending time with his granddaughter listening to her play her guitar and bass on holiday gatherings.
Charles is survived by his mother, Ernestine; his wife, Teresa; his stepdaughter, Anna; his brothers, Steven and Donald and their families; his nephew, Phillip; his niece, Rebecca; and his step granddaughter, Jenna.
A funeral service officiated Rabbi Akiva Ackerman is scheduled for Monday, August 26, 2024 at Schwartz Brothers-Jeffer Memorial Chapels from 5:00 – 9:00 pm at 114-03 Queens Boulevard, Forest Hills NY 11375.
