Donald was born April 8, 1935 to Helen Weppler McShea and Daniel Leo McShea in New York City at St. Clare’s Hospital, and would become the oldest of seven siblings. He attended Sacred Heart Grammar School, Immaculata High School, and St. John’s University.
Following his education, he became a Journeyman Plumber with Plumbers Local #2 (now #1) of New York City, and worked throughout his life as a plumber in construction across the city. He went on to retire after serving 10 years as a plumber for the New York City Board of Education. He is a lifetime member of Plumbers Local #2 and George W. Hudson Knights of Columbus of Woodside, New York.
Donald was always happy to be in the presence of his children and grandchildren, never missing the chance to deliver a teary-eyed, “I love ya.” A lifetime lover of music, the tenor took part in serenading family and friends, conducting his siblings and tapping his foot along to the songs of their youth.
He loved the game of golf and enjoyed a good Guiness with a sidecar of Jameson. When he wasn’t singing to the music, he was taking his lifelong dance partner and wife of 59 years, Patricia, to the dance floor to Lindy.
Donald was predeceased by mother, Helen Weppler McShea, father, Daniel Leo McShea, and brothers, William McShea and Eugene McShea. He is survived by loving wife, Patricia E. McShea, brothers, George McShea, Michael McShea and Kevin McShea, and sister, Mary Dorothea McShea Wuerstlin.
Donald is also survived by son, Daniel J. McShea (Carolyn), daughter, Anne Marie McShea Margies (Robert), son, Edward M. McShea (Kathleen), son, Christopher McShea (Stephanie), dearest sister-in-law, Eileen M. Casey, and nine grandchildren – Meghan, Haley, and Shannon Margies; Casey, Lorraine, and Donald McShea; and Kylie, Lindsay, and Jack McShea.
In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to The Isabella Santos Foundation, an organization that funds research, treatment and support of families affected by rare pediatric cancers.
