Diana Eleonore Tscherne

A visitation for Diana will be held Wednesday, July 13, 2022 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Frederick Funeral Home, 192-15 Northern Boulevard, Flushing, NY 11358. A funeral service will occur Thursday, July 14, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 149-40 11th Avenue, Whitestone, NY 11357.

Diana Eleonore Tscherne was born on June 1, 1930, in Jamaica Hospital in Queens. She spent her early years in NY, but her father’s death when she was 8, resulted in the family returning to Germany. She was raised in Herrstein, home to her family since the 1300s – but lived through the hardships that came with being an American in Germany during WWII. She and her younger sister Anita returned to America as teenagers at the end of the War. She worked as a housekeeper and earned her GED while caring for her sister and petitioning for and funding her mother’s return to the US. She always took on responsibilities and made things happen.

She was married to the love of her life, Frank Tscherne for almost 55 years and raised two daughters, Susan and Sandra, who she is survived by. Diana’s greatest role in life was that of being a grandmother, biologically to Stephanie, Matthew, Diana, Emma & Laura, but in action and spirit to Larry & Melody as well. She loved Fred and Frank, her sons-in-law as if they were her own sons. She is survived by 8 nieces and nephews.

Her love was one that knew no bounds, to others it was always clear how deeply she valued her family and felt overwhelming pride for each of them. To those she encountered, she made them feel like family, always welcoming them into her home and heart. She showed her love by baking and cooking for people, imparting her recipes and kitchen advice to others to provide comfort, celebrate, or solve issues. In recent years, her constant companion and best friend was Georgia, a golden retriever who loved her Grandma (and the under-the-table treats she fed her) and was always around to show her affection. She was sassy, defined by her generosity and creativity, her appreciation for beauty and nature, and her ability to teach. She loved to be with friends, at church, at home, at the American Martyr’s and St. Kevin’s seniors having coffee or playing cards. She was super competitive at games and would try to win by any means. To Diana, there was a purpose to every day, and in that an opportunity to grow and learn to be our best selves. Her hair was always perfect and when you came close, you would recognize her Chanel No. 5. She coached each of us to fight for ourselves, teaching us that the only choices are to sink or swim when dropped into the deep end, but we always knew she was right there to lift us up. She was a very patient teacher who loved to witness and celebrate our successes and help guide and strengthen us whenever she could. Diana could see the capabilities in the people she encountered and was always the first to believe in you even when you couldn’t see what the future would hold. Our beloved Grandma and Mom was a true warrior, a force to be reckoned with, one we truly believed to be indestructible. Diana was resilient with a fun-loving spirit, and she lived with grace and gratitude each and every day. She will be missed by many people across cities, continents, and time zones, and she told us this week, that if we ever need her, we should look for a cardinal outside and that’s her watching out for us all.
