Denise Maria Perlak, age 65, peacefully passed away near her home in The Villages, Florida, on October 20th, 2022, after bravely battling the horrific challenges of multiple sclerosis for nearly 30 years.
Born and raised on Rose Ave in Flushing Queens, NY, she grew up an only child with her loving parents, Edward J Perlak and Gloria M Toffolo Perlak and her grandmother Elisa Toffolo. (all preceding her in death 1985, 1998, and 1998)
She graduated from Mary’s Nativity Grammar School, Bishop Reilly HS, and received her BA and master’s in Urban Studies from Queens College.
The beautiful Kissena Park, which was practically her backyard, always held a special place in her heart. Denise, inspired by her mother’s civic volunteerism, continued in her mother’s footsteps and was the President of Kissena Park Civic Association for many years. She also conceived and organized the Kissena Park Walking Club (so senior citizens could enjoy walking safely in groups and getting to know their neighbors), as well as having served in so many other community service roles.
Her passion for animals, especially dogs, also drew her to serve and donate to many shelters, and animal programs throughout her life. Her dear Poochini and Frankie will always be a part of her heart.
She was a leading real estate agent, excellent photographer, avid volunteer, and enjoyed snow skiing, dancing, tennis, swimming, boating, and anything around the water.
She spent the last 15 years enjoying the sunshine and coastal waters of Florida and continued to serve animal rescue groups, civic volunteer groups, and the MS group in the Villages.
“A sense that one person can make a difference. Taking the first step is initially hard, very hard, but once they become involved and persevere, they will find that many changes can take place.” Denise Perlak
She leaves behind her loving cousins Carol, Tom, Marianne and Dee, and many friends who will dearly miss her.
She will be remembered as supernaturally strong and brave, amazingly resilient, independent, and passionate… a fighter, a world changer, an animal lover, and a true friend.
A graveside service will be schedule at Mt St Mary’s Cemetery in Fresh Meadows, NY. Date-time and more information can be found at www.quinn-fogartyfuneralhome.com 718-353-5166.
