Hazel "Nana" Rolle, 93, of Palm Coast, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 10, 2023, at the Stuart F. Meyer Hospice House. Born on August 24, 1930, in Miami, Florida, to the late Dolphus and Hazel Brown, Hazel's journey through life was marked by love, family, and a vibrant spirit.
At the age of 6, Hazel moved to Nassau, Bahamas, where she spent a few formative years before graduating from Little Our Ladies High School. Returning to Miami in her later teens, she embarked on a life-changing journey when, 71 years ago, she met the love of her life, Herbert Rolle "Herbie". Together, they built a large and loving family in Bronx, New York.
Hazel dedicated many years of her working life as an operator for ATT before retiring in 1989. Seeking a peaceful retirement, she and Herbie relocated to Palm Coast, Florida, where Hazel indulged in her love for travel, cruising, and the occasional thrill at the "one-armed bandit machine." However, her greatest joy was found in the company of her extensive family, and she attended as many family gatherings as possible.
A devoted member of First AME Church of Palm Coast, Hazel actively participated in the church women's group. She lived a life filled with faith, compassion, and a strong sense of community.
Hazel Rolle was preceded in death by her sons, Harcourt Brown and Herbert Rolle "Stevie"granddaughter, Courtney Butts. She is survived by her loving husband, Herbert "Herbie," and a cherished family, including children Joelyn "Pinnie" and husband Raymond Abdul-Mateen, Robert Rolle, Ronald Rolle "Shorty", Charlene Rolle, Pauline Rolle, Melissa Rolle-Johnson, James Rolle, Diana Rolle, Calvin Rolle, and Arthur Rolle.
Her legacy extends through her grandchildren: Stephanie, Brian, John, Courtney, Charnetta, Khadijah, Kymani, Malcolm, Najee, Danai, Mia, Zubria, Shaquashia, Kyle, and Shaquille. She is also remembered by her great-grandchildren Thaddeaus, Aaron, Ayah, Rufus "Drew", Sage, Miles, Eliott, Christian, Zara, Janessa "Tia", Darren, Peyton, Trevor, Nilah, Danarre, Cashmir, Amari, Amir, Cail and Roi'el as well as several great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Millicent Storr, Bernadette Phillips, Andrew Brown, Dorris Brown-Hunt and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Hazel Rolle's memory will be honored through contributions to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Shriners Hospitals for Children.
A final resting place will be at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, New York, where she will be laid to rest. Hazel "Nana" Rolle's enduring spirit, love, and warmth will be cherished by all who had the privilege of sharing in her remarkable journey.
A viewing for Hazel will be held Saturday, December 16, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at First AME Church of Palm Coast, 91 North Old Kings Road, Palm Coast, Florida 32137, followed by a funeral service at 3:00 PM.
