Agnes Elizabeth Harewood

Agnes Elizabeth Harewood, (nee McIntosh ) was born on the Caribbean island of Aruba to Matilda Webster and Joseph Hutchinson on June 8, 1941. Agnes was raised by her aunt Elizabeth in Grenada surrounded by a host of cousins, aunts and uncles in her large extended family. Upon graduating from St. Andrew’s Anglican Secondary School, Agnes began nursing school. While in nursing school, she met the love of her life, Willis, on the beautiful beach of Gran Anse in Grenada. Willis, from the neighboring island of Barbados worked in Grenada and believed he was destined to go to Grenada to meet the woman who would become his wife. Agnes followed Willis in 1966 to Brooklyn, New York where she and Willis married. Agnes and Willis had one daughter, Cassandra Elizabeth, the love and joy of both of their lives.

While in New York, Agnes pursued her education at Long Island University where she would complete a bachelor’s degree in Nursing and became a registered nurse. Agnes had an illustrious career in nursing which included being an operating charge nurse for many years while in New York. Agnes and Willis moved to New Orleans, Louisiana in 1979. Agnes would continue her career in nursing primarily in the Orleans Parish School District where she taught courses in Health Careers, worked as a school nurse in several New Orleans area schools, and worked for the migrant education program. Agnes loved her career and especially enjoyed lifelong friendships with many coworkers. Agnes was an active member St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in New Orleans where she served on the alter guild, choir and met the ladies of “Just Friends”, a social group of friends.

Agnes and Willis retired to Palm Coast, Florida in 2002. They enjoyed the friendly, vibrant and engaging community where they met a host of wonderful neighbors and friends. Agnes was a faithful member of St Thomas Episcopal Church where she joined the St. Thomas’ Nurses Association and was a patron of the Choral Arts Society. She enjoyed civic engagement as a member of the Flagler County NAACP and the Grenadian Association of Palm Coast.

Those who knew Agnes, knew she was defined by faith, family and friendship. A devout Anglican/Episcopalian, Agnes sought comfort in reading from her prayer book, every morning and every night. She loved to spend time with her large extended family in New York, Grenada Carriacou, Barbados and in California with her daughter and her family. Agnes loved traveling the world with friends and family. She loved celebrating birthdays, holidays and spending Sunday dinner with friends watching her favorite football team, the New Orleans Saints. She loved to entertain in her home, enjoyed gardening, cooking, dancing and music of all kinds.

Agnes’ greatest happiness was being a mother to Cassandra and a doting grandmother. She loved and enjoyed all of Cassandra’s friends as if they were her own. She hosted many a backyard party, was invited to and attended many of Cassandra’s friend’s weddings, parties and gatherings. She enjoyed every moment and every memory. She enjoyed hosting her grand daughters during the summer in New Orleans filled with picnicking, fishing and going to fairs and amusement parks. She loved every aspect of caring for her youngest granddaughter from changing diapers to walking her to school, riding the Santa Monica Big Blue bus, reading her stories at night and telling her stories about her Grandpa Willis.

Agnes had a quiet independence, quick wit, strength, style, beauty and wisdom which she exuded wherever she went. She was a fiercely loyal friend and protector of family. She touched lives wherever she went. She is gone from this Earth but will never to be forgotten and living eternally with God. Per her request, Agnes will be interred with her beloved Willis in Barbados.

Agnes was predeceased by her parents Matilda and Joseph. Her beloved sister Sybil Philip. Her best friend and husband, Willis. She leaves to mourn, her adoring daughter, Cassandra Harewood-Pope, son, Philip Green of Barbados, son in law Blaine Pope, daughter in law Cheryl Hunte, grand daughters, Phillan Nikita, Tiffany Nicole, Johana Aziza and grand sons, Daniel and Donico of Barbados, sister Josephine McIntosh of New York, sisters Theresa Cayenne of New York and Inez Romaine of England, brothers Jim and Bolland Nelson of England and Willie Nelson of Carriacou, sisters in law, Anita (Rudolph) Jack-Reading , Angela Branch, both of New York, Jeannette (Sherlock) Holder, Monica Nurse, Mavis Stoute, Glenis Alleyne and Sandra Franklyn all of Barbados, brothers in law, Earle Harewood, Jeffrey, Trevor and Anthony Thorne of New York, O’Brian Thorne, Victor, Lionel and Geoffrey Stoute of Barbados, loyal, trusted and dedicated friends Rudolph and Patricia Maynard, sister in Christ, Shelah Quash and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, in laws and friends

The family of Agnes Harewood would like to extend heartfelt love and appreciation for the excellent, loving and dedicated care of Dr. Padmaja Sai, Stacey Sproull, ARNP and dedicated front office staff at Flagler Adventist Hospital in Palm Coast, Dr. Edward Garon and Blanca Ledezma, P.A of UCLA in Los Angeles, caregivers, Karine Jean Luis, Lorraine Davis, Sabine Desforges, Rhonda Scott and to all the staff that loved and cared for Miss Agnes at Sabal Palms Assisted Living.
