The son of George J. Cooney and Ethel F. Cooney, Mike was born on July 11, 1950 in The Hague, Netherlands. He grew up in Northern Virginia and attended Staunton Military Academy until 1968. At the age of 18, Mike eagerly enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a courageous young infantryman in the Vietnam War. He was awarded a Purple Heart from the President of the United States for wounds received in action in Vietnam on July 4, 1969. After his military service, Mike joined the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and Explosives as a Firearms Enforcement Officer. He passionately served the ATF for more than 30 years, providing invaluable weaponry expertise and supporting a variety of critical missions. The personal and professional relationships that Mike established throughout his career made lasting impressions on all who knew him.
Mike is predeceased Ethel Frances Cooney and George Joseph Cooney. He is survived by his cousin, Carol A. Palandrani, along with many cherished cousins, friends, and colleagues. His loved ones remember him fondly for his good nature, kind heart, sense of humor, and love for all things beer and ice cream.
No funeral or memorial service is immediately planned. The family will notify loved ones in the future when a service is scheduled.
