Michael James Boyd, 61, of Alexandria, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday April 15, 2020. He was surrounded by family and close friends. Mike was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2015 and courageously fought his disease for over 4 ½ years. He lived life to the fullest and never gave up. He never complained and never missed work up until the day before his passing.
Mike was born in Merced, CA on November 16, 1958 to Christina (Mullins) Boyd and the late Loyd Melvin Boyd Sr. He and his family moved to Northern Virginia in the early 1970’s. Mike attended school in Fairfax County and graduated from James Robinson High School in 1976. After high school, he served in the Army on active duty from 1978-1981 and the reserves until 1984.
Always an entrepreneur, Mike managed several businesses before starting his own remodel contracting company, M J Cleaning and Painting Inc, in 1994. While he started out as a one man show, cleaning and painting apartments, over the years he taught himself how to fully remodel units and was eventually able to employ a very loyal crew.
Mike was a very accomplished bowler, bowling in multiple leagues each week as well as various tournaments around the country. He reached a memorable milestone in April 2019 as he participated in his 25th annual National Open Championship. Mike had fourteen certified 300 games and four certified 800 series. His high league average was 227 in the 2006-2007 season. In recent years Mike was actively involved in sponsoring and promoting charitable bowling tournaments whose proceeds support our military veterans.
Mike also loved boating. He could always be found on the water on summer weekends. He made it a point to let everyone know there are only 16 weeks of summer and he intended to make the most of it! He took great joy in sharing a day on the lake with family and friends and always welcomed newcomers. Mike always made sure new friends received a tour of the lake’s finest highlights.
Mike also enjoyed sports. He was a NASCAR enthusiast and loved attending races with family and friends. He also loved the Oakland Raiders and Washington Nationals and enjoyed watching golf.
Mike is survived by his loving wife of 5 years, Jennifer Lloyd of Alexandria; beloved puppy dog, Lizzy; mother, Christina Boyd (Helmut Eibl); sister, Dena Pollak (Dan); brother, Loyd Boyd Jr. (Kristal); children Ellen Pedrick, Candice Boyd (Jay), Jeffrey Boyd (Megan) and Mikey and Jennifer Nadjmabadi; grandchildren Ava, Kyleigh, Vanessa and Michelle; niece, Heather Kirkham (Melanie) and their children Hadley and Matthew; niece, Holly Kirkham and daughter, Samantha; and niece Delaney Pollak.
Donating to charity was also very important to Mike. He always made generous contributions to various organizations. In Mike’s honor, in lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the VCS Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 194, Herndon, VA, 20172 or at VCSCancerFoundation.org.
Funeral arrangements are by National Funeral Home in Falls Church, VA. As Mike chose to be cremated, his ashes will be spread in his favorite cove at Lake Anna, Virginia in a private ceremony with family this summer. A celebration of life for family and friends will be scheduled at a later date due to current social gathering restrictions.
