Mary Rose was born on August 4, 1934 in Wilson County, North Carolina.
She attended Northern Nash High School in Nash County, North Carolina where she was a cheerleader, a basketball player, and voted "Friendliest" in her class. Her peers also predicted she would work in the fashion industry because she was always looking stylish, a knack she kept up with all her life. She was married in 1955 and later moved with her family in 1962 to Falls Church, Virginia.
Mary was known for her work ethic with her professional career beginning at Guaranty Bank & Trust of Falls Church (later, Riggs Bank) before her tenure at ExxonMobil. Mary was a longtime member of Boulevard Baptist Church (Falls Church, VA) before moving her membership to First Baptist Church of Springfield. She took great pride in her home in Springfield, and hosted many family gatherings there, complete with her signature sourdough rolls, "Dizzie chicken" casserole, banana-pineapple-coconut cake, among other delicious recipes. She cherished her relationships with her neighbors, and always greatly appreciated the help of Gary and Debbie Lucier in decorating her home for Christmas among their countless other acts of service to her.
Mary had a life-long love of Gospel music and especially enjoyed attending Gospel Sings in Fairfax County, VA. Her favorite hymn was "Rock of Ages," and she loved listening to the Gaithers. She often spent her time helping others, through volunteering to serve in her church, sending care packages and cards, and packing meals weekly at church for those in need. Her hobbies included reading, needlework, rug-hooking, and sewing.
Mary Rose will be remembered as a godly woman who loved Jesus and her family tremendously and prioritized helping others.
A small gathering of friends and family will take place at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, November 17, 2024, at National Funeral Home in Falls Church, 7482 Lee Highway, with a funeral and graveside service to follow.
Flowers can be sent to National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, VA 22042. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mary's name to the American Heart Association and/or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
