

Beloved mother Elmay J. Coats 89 died on May 27, 2013 at her home in Springfield, VA. Daughter of the late Carroll H. & Elmay J. Vasey Price of Pennsylvania. Wife of the late Thomas Spearman Coats formerly of Louisiana (LA). Mother of Cathleen A. Barker (Edward) of Falls Church, VA; Thomas M. Coats of Springfield, VA.; Janestine M. Pedigo (Barry) of Eutis, FL.; and Carol Coats of Alexandria, VA. Survived by brother, Charles L. Price (Ann) of Port Orchard, WA. [brothers, late John R. Price (Connie) of Alexandria, VA. and late James H. Price (Albina) of Arlington, VA, and sister late Mary L. Moodey (Keith) of Charleroi, PA], sisters-in-law of Beverly Coats Patterson of Birmingham, AL. and late Barbara Cots Arnberg of Montgomery, AL.and brother-in-law John B. Coats of Slidell, LA. Grandmother of Barry W., Jr. of SC, Thomas N. of Reston, VA., & Leigh-Anne M. Pedigo of Eustis, FL; Jessica Elmay-Joy Albers (Brian) of Philadelphia, PA & Trevor R. Barker (Karen) of Springfield, VA. and beloved aunt of 22 nieces & nephews.
Visitation at 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Murphy Funeral Home June 2nd & Christian Funeral Mass at 10:30 am June 3rd St Philip's Catholic Church both in Falls Church, VA. Charitable donations may be made to the Humane Society or a charity of your choice. Interment Arlington National Cemetery to be announced at a later date.
Elmay graduated from Monongahela High School in 1943 and obtained her first employment at the Federal Supply Company, a subsidiary of the Pittsburgh Coal Company in Library, PA. She next obtained employment in civil service for the Navy Intelligence Personnel Office in Washington, D.C. where she met her Navy husband Thomas Spearman Coats from Bastrop, LA. They married in 1950 and in1953 spent 3 1/2 years in Colombo, Ceylon where her husband was stationed as naval attaché. After that tour of duty, they returned to the States and resided in Alexandria, VA. They had four children, Cathleen, Thomas, Janestine and Carol. In 1958, Elmay was widowed and later moved to Charleroi in 1962 where she had family and raised her children. After her children returned to Virginia in the early 1970's, Elmay moved to Monongahela, where she worked managing a senior citizen center. Following retirement, she relocated to Lorton, VA. about 1985 to be near her children and grandchildren. Two of her daughters married, Cathleen to Edward H. Barker, III and Janestine to Barry W. Pedigo, Sr. Janestine had three children, Barry, Tommy, and Leigh-Anne. Cathleen had two children, Jessica and Trevor; both married, Jessica to Brian Albers and Trevor to Karen Berta. Trevor and his wife Karen are expecting Elmay's first great granddaughter, Kaylan. Elmay celebrated her 89th birthday in her home in Springfield, VA with her brother Charlie Price, her niece Suzi & husband Terry Smith surrounded by her children Cathleen, Janestine, & Tommy and three of her grandchildren Tommy, Jessica & Trevor, where she passed away the next day. Elmay was an awesome mother and grandmother, cherished by all, who will be dearly missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, June 3 at 10:30 a.m. in St Philip’s Catholic Church, 7500 St Philip’s Ct, Falls Church, VA. Charitable donations may be made to the Humane Society or a charity of your choice. Interment in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
