Bette Jay Flax, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend passed away on January 9, 2024 at the age of 79 after a courageous battle with Cerebellar Ataxia. She leaves a legacy of love, resilience, and a lifetime of cherished memories.
Bette is survived by her husband and best friend of 37 years, Marty Flax, her son Rob Feldman (Karen), her daughter Marti Cullen, her bonus children Ron Flax (Mindi), Wendy Salzman (Kenny), Gary Flax (Elena), her sister Judy Friswell, Brother-in-Law Richard Flax (Kathy), eleven grandchildren, one great grandson and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Martin Jay, her mother, Rose Jay and her sister, Gail Jay.
Bette was born on June 2, 1944 and raised in Great Neck, New York. She earned her teaching degree at American University and her master’s in education at the University of Maryland. She stayed in the Maryland area. After her teaching career and enjoying raising her children Rob and Marti, Bette met the love of her life, Marty and became a Nutritionist. She took her show on the road and appeared on NBC news to spread her knowledge in the field. She continued to help and inspire many people in the Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia areas to learn how to build a healthier lifestyle.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to National Ataxia Foundation or St Jude Childhood Cancer Center in honor of Bette’s twin sister Gail. Bette will be dearly missed by her family and friends. May she rest in peace.
Services will be held at National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church Virginia on Sunday, January 14, 2024 at 1:00 PM.
The family will be sitting Shiva on Sunday, January 14, 2024 and Monday, January 15, 2024 at 7:00 PM. Shiva will be held at the home of the Flax family, 15309 Chinaberry Street, North Potomac, Maryland, 20878.
