William Wright, 91, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2024 in the warm embrace of his late wife, Irene (Dubreuil) Wright, surrounded by all the memories he loved and cherished. Bill was born on June 24, 1933 in Fall River, the son of the late Lester Wright and the late Louise (Taylor) Wright Gouveia. He grew up on Ray Street and he and his brothers, Lester and Frank, spent many hours playing in the woods that is now home to Durfee High School.
Bill attended Fall River public schools and graduated from BMC Durfee High School class of 1952. He thoroughly enjoyed his time in the US Army serving from 1953 to 1955, attaining the rank of Corporal. He received the Korean War Commemorative Service Award in 2000.
Bill worked for the City of Fall River for nearly two decades, retiring as the very beloved custodian of the Dubuque Elementary School. Prior to this, he worked many years for the Sterling Pile Company in Fall River.
In his youth, Bill was a boy scout and as an adult became a Cub Scoutmaster for Troop 25 when his sons joined scouting. He received the council’s highest recognition of an adult leader, the Silver Beaver Award which is given for distinguished service to young people.
Bill had a penchant for gardening and landscaping, having worked many summer weekends for his cousin Charlie’s landscaping service. He was an all-around Mr. Fix-It and could fix, repair, and rebuild just about anything.
Bill was an avid woodworker making cabinets, benches, shelving, wooden banks and toy cradles for his grandchildren. In his later years, he took up building complex model wooden ships and in the past few years transitioned to building Lego models – most recently the Titanic ship.
His family was everything to him. He was always helping and lending a hand where needed. No matter what it was or what was needed he always took care of his family. Family was of the upmost importance to him and we are forever grateful.
