Born in St. Michael, Azores, she was a daughter of the late Manuel Tavares and Angelina Cordeiro.
Sophie worked for several years as a sewing machine operator at various Fall River textile mills before leaving the workforce to raise her ever-growing family. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Grace Church in Westport. Along with gardening, she enjoyed traveling with Bert to Europe, especially Portugal, visiting several states and taking cruises. Above all else, Sophie loved spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her children: Louise Guinen and her husband Gary of East Freetown, Humberto Eleuterio, Jr. and his wife Dottie of Rehoboth and Paul Eleuterio and his wife Vivian of Tiverton; her grandchildren: Matthew, Corie-Lynn, Jill, Stephanie, Robert, Elizabeth, Amanda and Paul; 13 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the grandmother of the late Angie Burchill and sister of the late Manuel Tavares, Mariano Tavares, Edwardo Tavares, Maria Jacome and Evelina Eleuterio.
Her funeral will be held Monday, June 17, 2024 at 10:30 AM from the Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place, 178 Winter Street, Fall River followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Grace Church, Westport. Relatives and friends are invited. Visitation will be held Monday morning from 9:00 – 10:30 AM, prior to the funeral. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River.
