Kevin Gerard Harrington, age 73, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Brigham and Women’s Hospital on Sunday, February 5, 2023. He was the devoted husband of Joy E. (Kenyon) Harrington for almost 49 years.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Patrick J. and Evelyn A. (Towers) Harrington.
Kevin was a proud Vietnam Veteran having served for two years in the U.S. Army for the First Cavalry Division. While in the Army, he received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. He also earned two bachelor’s degrees from Bridgewater State College and UMass Dartmouth.
A fireman for 31 years with the Fall River Fire Department, he retired as the proud Captain of Engine 6 in 2007. He was a member of the Fall River Firefighters Union.
Kevin’s family was the focal point of his life. He met his wife through a family member and he always commented that she caught his eye immediately. Kevin was the proud father of two daughters, Shannon Connell and husband Larry, and Erin Harrington, and Papa to his five grandchildren, Patrick, Michael, Grace, Jack, and Daniel. He could be found at his grandkids’ sporting events from basketball and swimming to baseball and soccer. Kevin was an avid reader and loved crossword puzzles. He was a devoted Boston sports fan and was passionate about politics. Kevin loved watching any western he could find being a huge fan of Chuck Connors.
In addition to his wife, two daughters, five grandchildren, he is survived by his brother Reverend Brian Harrington, Sister Kathleen Harrington, RSM, and Sister Sheila Harrington, RSM. He was pre-deceased by his eldest sister, Sister Patricia Harrington, RSM.
His funeral will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2023 at 11:00AM in Holy Name Church, 709 Hanover Street, Fall River. Relatives and friends invited. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in memory of Kevin Harrington to support cancer research and patient care at: Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O.
