John M. “Jack” Hughes III, age 84, of Westport, passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2013 in Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Mildred L. “Millie” (Hutchins) Hughes and the late Dorothy (Flanagan) Hughes.
Born in Fall River, the son of the late John M. Hughes Jr. and the late Mabel (Sutcliffe) Hughes, he spent most of his life in Fall River before moving to Westport in 1969. He was a graduate of Coyle & Cassidy High School in Taunton and received his Bachelor’s Degree from Boston College.
Mr. Hughes was employed as a Supervisor and Social Worker in the Fall River Welfare Department for 35 years until his retirement in 1990 and also served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.
He was an avid bowler, traveler, golfer and enjoyed hunting. Mr. Hughes was a member of the Fall River Rod & Gun Club, the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and Knights of Columbus in Tiverton. He was also a Massachusetts State Skeet Shooting Champion.
In addition to his wife he is survived by five step-children Nancy DiRienzo of Revere, MA, Lisa A.Boyer of Bronx, NY, Michael F. DiRienzo of Ware, MA, Stephen A. DiRienzo of W. Springfield, MA and Tina M. Scalisi of Saugus, MA; eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
His funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at 9 AM from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME OF MEMORIAL TRIBUTE AT CHERRY PLACE 178 Winter St., Fall River followed by his funeral mass at 10AM in St. John the Baptist Church 945 Main Rd., Westport. Visiting hours Monday from 4 to 7PM. Contributions in his honor may be made to the American Cancer Society 30 Speen St, Framingham, MA 01701. Burial private.
