John E. Eckersley, “Jack,” age 86, of Tiverton, passed away Wednesday, October 23, 2024 at Charlton Memorial Hospital, Fall River. He was the husband of Dorothea (Arruda) Eckersley to whom he has been married for the past 36 years.
Born in Fall River, a son of the late John D. and Helen M. (Keating) Eckersley, he spent his youth in Fall River and lived in Westport for many years before moving to Tiverton 36 years ago.
A graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School, Class of 1957, Jack served in the United States Air Force from 1956-1960. While in the Air Force, he was stationed at the RAF Chelveston in England and was honorably discharged at the rank of Airman 2nd Class.
He started his career at the Fall River Herald News as a Compositor before retiring in advertising sales in 2000 after 40 years. An avid Boston sports fan, Jack was recreational pilot and was a member of the Hiddenbrook Radio Control Club, often flying with his close friend, Mark Felisberto.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the Southcoast VNA team for the kind and comforting care they provided to Jack.
In addition to his wife Dorothea, he is survived by one son, retired Lt. Colonel Scott Eckersley, Connecticut State Police of Naples, FL; one granddaughter, Bailey R. Eckersley and one niece and three nephews. He was the father of the late Kimberly A. Eckersley.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 30, 2024 from 9:15 to 10:15AM in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place, 178 Winter Street, Fall River, followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM in St. Theresa’s Church, 265 Stafford Rd., Tiverton. Contributions in his honor may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO BOX 758516, Topeka, KS 66675. Burial in St Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River.
