John W. “Jake” Cummings, age 96, passed away Monday, December 20, 2021 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Virginia B. (Machado) Cummings to whom he was married 69 years before her passing in 2018.
Born in Fall River a son of the late William F. and Agnes (Kidd) Cummings he was a lifelong resident of the city.
A proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, he served during World War II. He worked for the City of Fall River Traffic Department for 40 years before his retirement in 2003.
A true handyman, he was usually seen fixing a car, radio or television for someone in his spare time. A patient and humble man, he led by example, never said no to anyone and will be remembered for his kindness and generosity.
He is survived by three daughters, Joan McKenna and her husband Douglas of Fall River, Mary Plouffe and her husband John of Bridgewater and Nancy Tobin and her husband Timothy of Berkley; one son, John “Jack” Cummings and his partner Donna Souza; nine grandchildren, Jennifer Teixeira, Matthew Cummings, Jim Plouffe, Kate O’Connell, Daniel O’Connell, Joy Aguiar, Louisa Place, Laura DeCoste and Marissa Marchand; twelve great-grandchildren, Kraig Teixeira, Katelyn and Ian Cummings, Ashton Aguiar, Elyas and Gabriel Place, Sean, Caleb and Sabrina Plouffe, Victoria Cole, and Mia and Charlie O’Connell; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late William and Peter Cummings, Mary Kelly and Virginia Murphy.
His Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at 9:00 AM from the Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place, 178 Winter St., Fall River followed by a Mass at 10:00 AM in Holy Name Church , 709 Hanover St., Fall River. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are Monday from 4:00 – 7:00 PM.
