Francis R. Buchanan, “Roy,” age 93, of Fall River, passed away, Saturday, September 28, 2019 in the Crawford Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of the late Helena Rose (Grant) Buchanan.
Born in Cohoes, NY, a son of the late Claude C. and Ida-May (Bouleris) Buchanan, he has been a long-time resident of Fall River.
A World War II Veteran of the United States Army, he was an Army Ranger that served with the 30th Infantry Division as a Machine Gun Squad Leader. He trained at Camp May in New Jersey for the Unites States Coast Guard and served on the “Lagare” a Coast Guard cutter.
He was the proud recipient of the Riffle Marksman Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, the European Theatre Medal with two stars, the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Army Occupational Medal, the Bronze Star and the Presidential Citation Medal. Francis was a Scout Master for Troop 219, St. Patrick’s Church, a former member of VFW Post 486 and a former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 295. At the age of 87, he took his first plane ride aboard the Honor Flight, when he landed in Washington D.C. he toured the area and met many dignitaries including Colin Powell.
A hard worker, he worked in various trades throughout his career. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed taking walks in the woods, nature, camping, hunting and fishing. He loved western movies, country music, reading, playing bingo, socializing and most of all spending time with his family.
He is survived by six children, Ida-May Pierce and her fiancé Stan Sawicki of New Bedford, Mike Buchanan and his wife Gerry of Somerset, Donna Pacheco and her husband Danny of Riverview, FL, Margaret Flynn and her husband Frank of Dartmouth, Daniel Buchanan and his wife Laura of NC and Irene Rodrigues and her husband Wayne of Fall River; twelve grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Irene Audet, Ida-May, Clarence, William, Gerald and Raymond Buchanan.
His Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2019 at 10:00AM in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place, 178 Winter Street, Fall River. Visiting hours Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00PM. Relatives and friends invited. Contributions in his honor may be made to Honor Flight New England, 193 Londonderry Turnpike, Unit 4, Hooksett, NH 03146. Burial private.
