Maria “Lulu” Luisa Herrera entered into eternal rest on Monday, October 31, 2022 at a nursing home in Falfurrias, Texas at the age of 97. She was born on December 22, 1924 to Rafael L. Herrera and Sinforiana Guerra Herrera in Falfurrias, Texas. Maria graduated from Falfurrias High School in 1941 as the class Valedictorian. She later graduated from Texas A&I University with her Master’s Degree in English and Education Summa Cum Laude.
Lulu dedicated over 42 years of service to Brooks County ISD beginning as the Secretary of the Superintendent of Schools and then she decided to venture into the classroom where she taught until her retirement. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society for 50 years and throughout that time, she held the position of President and Secretary.
In her spare time, Maria loved to sew and she was very good at it. She enjoyed traveling and had already visited several places including Europe and Alaska. Lulu was very social, friendly and outgoing. She was always willing to help anyone that needed it and gave 100 percent effort in all she did.
She was reunited in Heaven with her parents; brother, Romualdo Herrera and brother-in-law, Robert Mulanax.
She is survived by her two sisters, Elena Herrera and Anita “Anna” Mulanax both of Falfurrias; sister-in-law, Petra G. Herrera of Falfurrias; two nieces, Janet (Scott) Adkins of Mesa, Arizona and Annette (Greg) Nichols of Katy, Texas; three nephews, Oscar Herrera of Falfurrias, Rafael (Margaret) Herrera of El Granada, California and Roberto (Kim) Herrera of Boerne, Texas and several grand nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Rosary will be held at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at the Funeraria Del Angel Howard Williams in Falfurrias with Visitation beginning at 8:30 a.m. Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Falfurrias and services will conclude with Burial at the Sacred Heart Cemetery.
