Mr. Schaefer was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Mascoutah Sportsman Club and the American Legion Post 58 in Belleville, Illinois. He enjoyed fishing and playing Santa Claus, and also attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in East St. Louis, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Schaefer, nee Kreigeskotte, his second wife, Loretta Schaefer, nee Boyce, his parents, Jacob and Bertha, nee Schilling, Schaefer, step-mother, Hilda Schaefer, a daughter, Doris Ann Schaefer, three brothers; Oliver, Clement, and Leon Schaefer, and two sisters; Betty Vernier and Lucille Pauketaut.
Surviving are his children; Tom (Patricia) Schaefer of Belleville, Illinois, Laurie (Mario Aguilar) May of Belleville, Illinois, Vickie (Ben) Ryan-Silva of Sacramento, California, and Connie Garner of Ironton, Missouri, two step-children; Edgar Keller of Arlington, Texas and Diane Pierce of Litchfield, Minnesota, 14 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, two brothers; Joseph Schaefer and Clarence (Vera) Schaefer, a sister, Verdel (Maurce) Felker, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 11 am, Friday, November 22, 2013 at Lake View Funeral Home, Fairview Heights, Illinois. Interment will be in Green Mount Catholic Cemetery, Belleville, Illinois.
