Dick was born on July 30,1935 in Bridgeport, Connecticut to Walter and Monica (Baltrusaitis) Kirkliauskas, immigrants from Lithuania through Ellis Island. He was the youngest of their three sons.
Dick was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 40 years, Carol Jean (Sullivan), his parents, and brothers Victor and Walter. He is survived by daughter Regina O'Shaughnessy (John), sons Rick (Dawn) and Steven (Pam), grandchildren Kristin, Erin (JJ), Ricky, Hannah (Kevin), Monica, Joey, and Steven, and
great-grandchildren, Christian, Carter, Charlotte, Chloe, and Blair as well as many nieces and nephews.
Dick graduated from Fairfield Prep High School, a Jesuit school, and the University of Bridgeport,
where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation, he moved to Arlington, Virginia and met the love of his life, Carol Jean. The night he met Carol, he told his friend that she was the woman he was going to marry. They married in 1959 and moved to Yonkers, New York, then to Fairfax, Virginia where he was employed by Manufacturers Aircraft Association as a Branch Manager. In 1975 he and a partner created Kirk & Smith, a patent firm located in Crystal City, Virginia.
In the 1990s, he ventured on his own as an independent Patent Agent. He continued working until the age of 84.
As a talented artist, Dick enjoyed wood carving, painting and drawing. He also enjoyed golfing, reading and spending time at his vacation home in Topsail Beach, North Carolina. Throughout his life, he enjoyed traveling, particularly on Catholic pilgrimages.
Dick was a 25-year parishioner of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Gainesville, Virginia. For many years he attended daily Mass. Dick's Roman Catholic faith was evident to all who met him. His focus in life was
for his children and grandchildren to have the same values, morals and faith in God.
Dick was a man who was not consumed with this world. He lived his life according to the promises of God and the hope of eternal life to come.
A Visitation will be held Monday, June 17th from 5-8 PM at Demaine Funeral Home, 10565 Main Street, Fairfax, VA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, June 18th at 10:30 AM at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 8213 Linton Hall Road, Gainesville, VA with Interment to follow at Fairfax Memorial Park, 9900 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Catholic Charities of Arlington (ccda.net) or Little Sisters of the Poor (littlesistersofthepoor.org).
