Paul N. Herbert of Fairfax, Va., passed away on January 30, 2022. He was born in Akron, Ohio, on March 14, 1957, and graduated from the University of Akron in 1979. Paul had a distinguished federal civil service career that included assignments at the U.S. Department of the Treasury and U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, earning special recognition from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for his work as a financial crimes investigator. He was an adjunct faculty member at George Mason University from 1997 to 2002, teaching courses on financial crime investigation. Paul was preceded in death by his father, Victor Herbert; sister Diane Adkins; father- and mother-in-law Henry and Marjorie Duel; sister-in-law Terry Thomas; and niece Alesia Booth. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Pam; sons Alex and Bill Herbert of Fairfax; mother Shirley Herbert of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; sisters Eileen Herbert (Nel) of Stow, Ohio and Sheila Whited (Jeff) of Richfield, Ohio; and sister-in-law Debby Padgett of Newport News, Va. He will be greatly missed by his nieces and nephews Amy Padgett (Brett), Matt Radtke, Kyle Whited, Brooke Ballard (Carlos), Laura Ballard, Andrew Whited (Bri) and Kelli Ballard, as well as extended family and friends. An avocational historian, Paul read voraciously and could speak on a wide range of topics. He at one time was president of the Historical Society of Fairfax County and contributed articles on American history to The Washington Times. He was author of several books including – “God Knows All Your Names: Stories in American History”; “Elinor Fry: A Legacy of Dance in Richmond”; “The Jefferson Hotel: The History of a Richmond Landmark”; “Musings of a Snow Bird”; and “Treason in the Rockies.” Paul was very generous with his family and cared about them deeply. A memorial service will be held at Demaine Funeral Home - Fairfax on February 10, 2022 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to a charity of the donor’s choosing.
