Mark was a generous and kind man and helped whenever I needed brute strength :-) – he emptied a barrel of water in my basement that I couldn't budge, he flipped a valve on a pipe that had been stuck, he got on my roof to clean off leaves (and got stuck up there!), and others.  

My favorite memory of Mark is how he helped my boys – one Mother's Day he took them out and bought rose bushes and they helped him plant them in my planters.  And whenever he was at the pool when my boys were there, he would do cannon balls off the diving board for them. Such a gentle soul.

Andrea, Thor and Erik - I know how this hurts right now, but time does heal and the wonderful memories of your husband/dad will sustain and strengthen you. These tributes on this page are a testament to the impact he had on peoples’ lives and how much he loved his family.

Mark has been a “big brother” to me for as long as I can remember.  Our families aren’t just close as friends, we share a deep and special bond that truly makes us family. While growing up in Parkfairfax, we shared so many holidays, birthdays, and special events together that I can’t think back on those days without a memory of Mark and the Rasmussen family coming to mind. When we would get together with Mark, we would love to reminisce about those days, and I cherish each and every wonderful memory. So many of our recent times spent with Mark centered around his visits with Andrea, Thor, and Erik on Christmas Eve which makes losing him at this time of year especially hard. Paul and I are so thankful we got to spend time with Mark and Andrea just this past October when he was home. We never thought it would be the last time. It brings me comfort to know that he is in heaven with my mother, Vera, who loved him very much. We will always hold a special place in our hearts for Mark and we will miss him dearly.

Mark and I worked together at WPNI in the 2000s.  Mark was known as all-around good guy…our go-to no matter what we needed and a gentle giant who made the place a special one.  What always struck me about Mark is that he loved three things:  his wife, his boys and his rugby 🏉.   Godspeed, Mark.

I am so sorry to hear of Mark's passing.  We were friends in high school and you could not ask for a nicer person.  I will miss him.


I am so devastated by the news of Mark's passing. I don't have the words to clearly express how sorry I am for your loss. 

I grew up with Mark when he and the Rasmussen family lived in Parkfairfax. David was in my grade, but I still knew Mark very well. To be honest, I was intimidated by him for a long time because he was a very big, tough kid, but as we got older, I realized what a sweetheart he could be. 

When we were in High School, I was a lifeguard at the pools in Parkfairfax, and Mark would come by often, and I would let him in even though he didn't live in Parkfairfax anymore at that time. The Rasmussens were very close friends with my best friend, Maria Whelan's, family. I would see Darlene and the girls pretty regularly. David went to Bishop Ireton and I went to St. Mary's Academy, while Mark was at T.C. Williams. 

A funny story about Mark -- He loved to play Tennis and would often come by the pool where I was working to cool off after playing. It started to become a big joke because Mark would ask girls out by suggesting they meet for a game of Tennis. This evolved into "Mark's Tennis Clinic for Girls" which we thought was a riot. 
I remember Mark being a tough guy who would scrap a lot, but he was also truly kind and sweet --IF he liked you. 

When I caught up with him at Maria's 50th birthday ten years ago, I was so happy to learn he had really turned out to be a success, with a great wife and family. Although we were not in touch, I would see him at funerals and weddings, so I hadn't lost complete touch with him or the other Rasmussens. I'm devastated that he has died so young. I will always remember the good times we shared when we were so young and full of dreams.

Our deepest condolences to the Rasmussen family. We have wonderful  memories of Mark as a wonderful brother, son, husband, father and uncle. Such a kind and loving spirit. We are praying and thinking of the family during this very difficult time.

First time I seen Mark as a new recruit on board, the aircraft carrier, Coral Sea . We had countless adventures in California , Nevada, and Mexico, and the ship hadn’t even pulled out of port . When overseas, Singapore, Thailand, Philippines, having the MPs chase us all over Hong Kong one night . I especially remember his chuckle, we both were two kids together in a candy store. Miss you, Mark. My heartfelt condolences.

I can't begin to tell you how much Mark meant to me and how we formed a bond of friendship and brotherhood.
Writing this is hard because I know there will never be another him in my life. He's the kind of person that if lucky enough, you'll meet once in your life. I am truly blessed by just knowing you.
A kind, caring, sacrificing person who took the time to let you know how he felt.
I will miss you greatly my brother. 

My sincerest condolences. Mark was indeed a great man,  friend,  fellow rugger, gentle giant and all around good person.  Remembering the many days on the field, side by side and then the  few pints with all the boys.  He will be missed.

Mark was a beautiful person. I remember how proud and loving he was of his family and his kindness towards everyone. 

I will remember Mark foremost for his warmth and gentle spirit, for his warm greetings and kind words. To be with Mark was to feel his peace. This photo of Mark and Eric during a Scout event on the Battleship New Jersey brings back wonderful memories of a true gentleman. Andi, Thor, Eric, I'm so sorry.

Mark was a devoted Husban to his lovely wife & two sons . He was very kind and lovely man with a great sense of humor . He will be missed by his family and all his friends. We  adore him so much. Rip🙏🥲

I will be forever grateful to you and your family for always being there for mine. I wish I could have met you sooner but I am forever thankful for the time we did have. Mark and I go way back playing some good rugby and having fun with friends and family he was the best friend I could have I miss so much. His family was always there for me we would talk on the phone all the time. Talking about many things from good and bad. My heart is broken badly. He and I grew togeather as great friends. I will miss him so much the stories I could tell would take lifetime that’s how much I’m going to miss him. I’ll think about every day what he is doing. Rest in peace big man/mark love you

Mark's dedication to family and community was always on display when our sons got together for camping trips, potlucks, Pinewood Derbies, and other Scouting events. I found a few photos from a 2008 Pack Camping trip that brought a smile. These are wonderful and cherished memories made meaningful only because we got to share them together.

A loving and powerful friend with a sense of humor that was self deprecating and tear jerker funny; he was a delightful storyteller.

Mark in back row with me playing for Virginia old boys most of which went on help form the Cardinals. We were playing in Richmond at the Celtic  festival,  As you can see by our smiles we live rugby.  Will miss by rugby brother! 

Condolences to the entire family. A good man taken way too young.  It was my pleasure to have played both against and with this man in the rugby forwards. Off the pitch a gentle giant of a man with a great smile.
