March 28, 1925 – March 20, 2022
Orangevale, California
John Ricketts, one week shy of 97, passed away on March 20, 2022 with family by his side. He was born in Sacramento, California on March 28, 1925 to Joseph and Margaret Ricketts. He called Orangevale his home for 68 years.
War was raging in the Pacific, so he joined the Marines and served in Iwo Jima, earning him the degree of Sharpshooter. After his honorable discharge, he helped work the family farm. He met and married the love of his life and they started a family while he was working for Purina. Next, John worked several years at Aerojet, until it shut down. From there he worked for a short time on his brother’s chicken ranch in Vacaville before starting his own successful business of 47 years doing yard maintenance.
John was preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty, of 72 years, his siblings, Ralph and Bud Ricketts, a sister Evelyn Heim and a son, Michael Ricketts. He leaves his sons, John Jr. and Danny Ricketts, daughters, Carolyn Schooley, Barbara Horton, and Patty Ross-Newton as well as their spouses, 11 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, his sister Marguerite Allott and many nieces and nephews.
John was always a hardworking, morally upstanding man and a lifelong member of the Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church. He loved his family and friends deeply and would help them whenever help was needed. He loved camping and the great outdoors, fishing and we can’t forget his tractor work and ongoing passion for gardening, which he did up until his death. The family would like to thank his workers from Help at Home who came to help with his daily routines.
Services will be at Mount Vernon in Citrus Heights on April 8, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. followed by graveside services and a reception. There are no words to express how much he will be missed.
