Hilda A Johnson

Hilda Almo Allen was born Saturday, May 31, 1919, to proud parents Joseph Henry Allen and Annie Hogg Allen, in Trawick, Texas. She left this world on Tuesday, October 16, 2012.

Hilda was a faithful servant of the lord, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and kind friend. She enjoyed singing and often did so through songs of praise to the lord. She was an avid participant and follower of all things political often throwing her support to one candidate or another. She had a strong passion for travel and cruising the seven seas was her preferred mode of transportation. She also had a penchant for enjoying a game or two at the local casino to relax and unwind. If she were lucky enough to win, she always shared her spoils. Hilda was a powerful woman with a strong sense of self and a stubborn streak that is indeed a family trait. She found humor in the irony and hypocrisy of situations and was always grateful and humbled for a long and prosperous life.

Hilda was the youngest of seven children born to Joseph and Annie. As a child she was bright, smart, and loved to have fun. During college, Hilda met and married Elmo Slider Sr. To this union two sons were born Elmo Allen Slider Jr. and Walter Slider. During their marriage they moved from Texas out west to California. When Hilda and Elmo later separated, Hilda took the opportunity to travel to Oregon to join family in Los Angeles. It was during this journey that she met Roy H. Williams. She would eventually join him in Sacramento and spend the next 40 years (until his death in 1987) in a committed partnership that would result in the birth of three children Herman R. Williams, Theresa M. Williams, and Lauren M. Williams. Hilda was an adoring and devoted mother. In the winter of 1987, Hilda would marry Allen Johnson Sr. and relocate from Sacramento, California to Greenville, Texas. While this union would not result in any children, the two blended their families and shared their love of travel and their commitment to God with one another. They were deeply in love and Hilda would remark throughout the years that, “the twelve years she had with Allen were the best years.”

She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and united with Century Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal church, where she was a faithful member for over 25 years. As a diligent servant of the Lord Hilda served on the usher board, taught Sunday school, was president of the choir and represented the church at district conferences. While living in Greenville, Texas, Hilda was a faithful and devoted member of Wesley Chapel CME. Her friends and family all knew that she had an abiding faith and love for God.

Hilda studied teaching and received her degree in education from Jarvis Christian College. She went on to teach elementary school and work for the US postal service. After teaching, Hilda took a position with the federal government for The Bureau of Land Management where she worked for many years until her retirement in 1986.

She is preceded in death by her mother and father; Joseph Allen and Annie Hogg Allen, life partner of 40 years Roy H. Williams and husband Allen Johnson Sr., four brothers; Ullysses Allen, Nathaniel Allen, Mark Allen, and Donald Allen, two sisters; Tessie Allen and Nonah Allen, three sons Walter Slider, Herman Williams, and Elmo Allen Slider Jr., Walter Slider, and one daughter; Lauren M. Williams, and one grandson Steven N. Day Jr.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving sister Ophelia Kerl (Dallas, TX) her loving daughter, Teresa Williams (Sacramento, CA); devoted step sons Allen Johnson Jr. (Gladewater, TX) and Derrick Johnson (Gladewater, TX); four granddaughters, Constance Slider Pierre and husband Jermaine L. Pierre, Darrien Johnson and husband Clenth M. Johnson, Sandra Slider, and Shayne Day-Bolar and husband James R. Bolar Sr.; two grandsons, Dennis E. Slider and Wendell J. Slider; seven great grand children James R. Bolar Jr., Briyannah Bolar, Anthony G. Slider, Amaya Barnes, Jaylen Q. Johnson, Camille Johnson, and Marlo Simone Pierre; one great great grand daughter Nevaeh Bolar; and Jacqulyn Tucker who was her primary caregiver and loved her as though she were her own mother.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 from 4-8pm at Mount Vernon Memorial Park, 8201 Greenback Ln Fair Oaks, CA 95628. A funeral service will be held at the Century Chapel CME 2801 29th Avenue Sacramento, California on Wednesday, October 24, 2012, by the Pastor Nicholas Betts. Interment will follow in the Mount Vernon Memorial Park 8201 Greenback Lane, Fair Oaks, CA.
