Dominic Frank Sacino was ushered into Heaven on June 30, 2017 after a short and spirited battle with Alzheimer's. He was born on October 21, 1930 in Los Angeles, California to Maggie Rose and Frank Sacino. He was athletic and gregarious from an early age, loving sports and playing outside. He played basketball and served as sports editor for Polytechnic High School in Los Angeles. Dick was very proud of being a USC Trojan, graduating in International Relations in 1953. Dick served his country well in South Korea as an Army Sergeant. Dick was successful in avoiding pots and pans duty, serving instead at the Officer's Club. Upon his honorable discharge in 1955 he returned to Los Angeles and began his long and illustrious career at Cal Farm Insurance Company. It was during his initial position as a claims adjuster, traveling throughout Southern California, that he developed his lifelong love of driving and his affinity for Cadillacs.
It was in Los Angeles that Dick met the love of his life Shirley Joy Sleyster, and they married in 1957. Dick and Shirley were thrilled to welcome two daughters, Christine and Lisa. While working and raising a family Dick entered law school at Southwestern University School of Law, graduating Cum Laude in 1961.
In 1967, Dick was promoted to Cal Farm Claims Manager, and the family moved to Moraga, California. There, they enjoyed a wonderful suburban life, with Dick coaching his daughters' softball games and attending Oakland A's games. Dick also enjoyed playing lowball with his buddies at the Oaks Club.
Dick was proud to accept a promotion to Cal Farm Senior Vice President of Claims and Legal. He continued to serve in this capacity when the company moved to Sacramento in 1980, and Dick and Shirley embraced their new life here. In particular, Dick enjoyed the friends he made at the Limelight. Dick retired from Cal-Farm in 1990, having also served as President of Pacific Claims Executive Association. After retirement, Dick was not done working as an attorney; he went on to start the Sacramento branch of Stockdale Peckham, and Warner, and later formed his own law firm, Sacino, Bertolino and Hallissey. He was particularly pleased to serve as a mediator and Judge Pro Tempore for Sacramento Superior Court. Dick had a distinguished career as a lawyer for 50 years.
Dick was baptized Catholic as a baby. He accepted the Lord into his heart upon the invitation of his then 5 year old granddaughter, Jessica. His closest Christian spiritual advisor was Pastor Earl Heverly, of Cornerstone Community Church in Sacramento.
Without question, Dick's family was the joy of his life. Dick was extremely proud of his Italian heritage, and imparted the family motto, La Famiglia e tutta, upon his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nothing gave Dick greater pleasure than the family trips, traveling to locales such as Italy, Jamaica, Hawaii, Tahoe, Santa Cruz, Florida, Coronado and Napa. Dick also instilled in the family a love of the music of Frank Sinatra.
Dick is survived by his loving wife, Shirley, of Sacramento, daughter Christine Sacino and husband Joseph Heinen of San Francisco, and daughter Lisa Sacino of Denver, grandchildren Jessica McMurdo and husband Riley McMurdo, Brandon Fryman and wife Caitlin Fryman, Chloe Fryman, Catherine Heinen, and great-grandchildren Finnley McMurdo, Declan McMurdo, Maddox Fryman and Delaney McMurdo. Dick is preceded in death by his parents Maggie and Frank, and his brother, Andrew.
