On February 11th 2023, the world lost an amazing man named Elza (Bert) Bertram.
Born on March 7th 1943 in Brewster Washington, he lived a country life and eventually moved to Seattle Washington with his parents and sister Grace. He attended King Garden School, and dropped out in the 10th grade.
At the age of 22, he met his wife Maryann. Together they raised 5 amazing children, Lisa, Sheryl, Lonnie, and the twins Janice and Gerald. Together they took in his cousin Tami, who had a physical handicap and helped guide her through school from the age of 11 up to her graduation.
Bert then decided to go back to school himself, and through hard work and lots of studying, he received his GED, and for him it was a great accomplishment which led him to finally landing a job with the Boeing Company, working on some of the most famous jets and planes. His most favorite was the 747.
Then after retiring from Boeing, he decided to open his own recycling business, naming it Bert & Son’s Recycling. Traveling around the state collecting scrap metals and such from work sites around the state. It also led to him tinkering around with a lot of the items he collected, making new things from old and learning how they all worked.
He had a love of nature. Camping, fishing, and seeing the sites the world had to offer him and his wife, and teaching his children about all he had learned throughout his time. After retiring Bert and Maryann took in their grandchildren, helping raise them from their young ages up to their graduations, sharing all his love of nature and of course Disneyland, Knocksberry Farm, and Lego Land just to name few. Roller-coasters were his favorite rides. He even took time to learn how to make his own candles and hand soaps.
He loved taking the kids out fishing down at the river, packing up lunches for them and spending the day doing what he loved, fishing. He felt proud and content watching his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren growing up and enjoying life. He loved the fact he could look at life through a child’s eyes and still revel in the wonders of the world.
Bert was truly an amazing man, loving his family was number one to him, his faith in God and knowing they were all watched over, helping him to guide his family through tough times and good times. An amazing husband who had a zest for learning, always wanting to know where places were which lead to him becoming a walking map, A truly loving and funny man. He will be deeply missed, but his wisdom and life lessons will forever be carried on through his family and friends and forever be with us in spirit and heart.
