Dellroy Holman, Jr., 82, of Everett, Washington, passed away peacefully in his home where he was deeply loved and cared for, Tuesday, August 29, 2023.
A funeral service to celebrate his extraordinary life will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, September 7, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 110 50th St SW, Everett, WA 98203. The burial and Firefighter Honor Guard will follow the service at Evergreen Cemetery, 4504 Broadway, Everett, WA 98203.
Dell was born on January 31, 1941, in Springville, Utah to Louis Delroy Holman and Dorothy Mary Dearing. He was the second oldest of four siblings. He loved his parents and siblings dearly.
Dell was a busy and rambunctious boy that loved it all. His love of nature and the great outdoors began as a child. His father took him and his family on many outdoor adventures including camping, fishing, and hunting. As a youth, he was part of the Boy Scouts of America. He thrived because of his time as a Scout as his father passed when he was a ten-year-old. He said many times that the Scouting program saved his life. He was thrilled to earn his Eagle Scout Award. In his later years he became Varsity Coach for the Boy Scouts of America and was asked to design and build a massive Pinewood derby track for the BSA National Jamboree in 1983.
He attended Spanish Fork High School in the 1950’s. While in high school he was a varsity wrestler and football player. After graduation, he served a faithful 2-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Northern California. A week after returning from his mission he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he honorably served his country for four years during the Vietnam War.
In 1968, he met and married his beautiful bride and wife of almost 55 years. Together, Dell and Mary, with their six children, one boy and five girls, created an amazingly full, family life.
He worked as a lineman for General Telephone for four years, a job he enjoyed because he got to be outdoors.
In January, 1972, he was so elated to start his career with the Everett Fire Department. He loved the brother and sisterhood camaraderie until the end of his life. In March 2002, after 30 years of unwavering, selfless and dedicated service to the city of Everett, WA, he retired as a driver for his cherished Fire Department. Also, he took on the duty of cleaning and maintaining their union hall for 45 years, a job that he did with his family until two months before his passing.
Post retirement was full-time fun. He enjoyed many adventures with his friends. He went tuna fishing in the Pacific Ocean. With his best friend of 72 years, “Uncle” Ron Ewell, they went deer hunting, and multiple fishing trips to Alaska and Pacific Northwest lakes, for years. He and Mary journeyed several times across the state of Washington to visit their grandchildren. They also traveled to Utah to visit his family and a special trip to Nauvoo, Illinois to see the Nauvoo Temple and sacred pioneer grounds that were part of his ancestry.
Sadly, during this retirement time, he and his wife were devastated when their only son, Ron, was tragically killed in a car accident, just after being hired as a fireman in Texarkana, TX. Dell was humbled that his son was following in his dad’s footsteps.
Dell loved and looked forward to spending time with all his grandchildren. He was incredibly proud of each one. He treasured them. He made each child feel special. They, in turn, had a very special bond with their grandpa. He also dearly cared for his daughters. He was so happy when they just showed up to visit without notice.
He stayed very active in his church throughout his life and held callings that helped many people. He and his wife, Mary, served in the LDS Seattle Temple for 22 years.
He loved his country and was proud that he was able to serve. He wore a Vietnam Veteran’s hat when he went out. It filled his heart when people would acknowledge and thank him for his service for our country which he cherished.
Towards the end of his life he enjoyed sharing the funny stories of his “hellion” youth years. He also shared his powerful testimony of Jesus Christ and how important it is to stay on the straight and narrow path. He was so grateful to have had the opportunity to serve God, family, country and his community.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters, Adelle Giles, Audra Neale, Amy (Dean) Daylo, Amanda (Benjamin) Schurig, and Anna Holman. As previously noted, he was preceded in death by his beloved son, Ron, 21 years ago. Grandchildren, Brayden, Spencer, Liam, Aisling, Adeline Neale, Samantha and Rowan Schurig.
A visitation for Dellroy will be held Wednesday, September 6, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Evergreen Funeral Home and Cemetery, 4504 Broadway, Everett, WA 98203. A funeral service will occur Thursday, September 7, 2023 at 11:00 AM at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 110 50th St SW, Everett, WA 98203. A graveside service will follow at Evergreen Cemetery 4504 Broadway, Everett, WA 98203.
