Al was born on November 4, 1940, in Compton, California, the son of the late Walter Edward Joy and Opal Nevada Joy.
Al graduated from Downey High School, class of 1959. He enlisted in the United States Army where he served his country as a telecommunication specialist while stationed in the Philippines and Okinawa. He later worked for McDonald Douglas until his retirement.
Al enjoyed spending time with his wife and family. He loved to fish, camp, and travel. Al was also very fond of his yard and sports. Some other interests were bowling, spending time with his friends at his local American Legion and VFW and playing basketball with his grandkids.
He was preceded in death by his parent’s, Walter and Opal Joy, and his two sisters, Shirley Decker and Linda Massari.
Surviving with his wife, Carol Joy of 55 years, are their three sons, Lane Joy (Marci), Tony Pruitt, Brian Joy (Lilia), and their daughter, Robin Joy. Grandchildren include, Tim Joy (Gwen), Kristen Moore (Chris), Barbara Quick (Jason), Ashley Gwaltney (Neal), Patrick Joy, Daniel Joy, Jamie Pruitt, Lynda Pruitt, Cecelia Beeman, Sarah Pruitt, Emily Pruitt, Dimitri Joy, and Tamara Joy. Along with 21 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank St. Anthony’s Hospice, and his caregivers, Jordan and Angela, for their love and dedication to Al.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 25, 2022, at Alexander West Chapel, with final resting place in Locust Hill Cemetery. A livestream of the service will be available at www.facebook.com/FuneralStreamUSA. Friends may visit on Monday, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
