Troy Montell Meriwether, a loving father, devoted family man, and hardworking coal miner, passed away on May 4, 2023, at the age of 51. He was born on December 10, 1971, in Evansville, IN, to Ernest L. Johnson, Jr. of Evansville, IN and Virginia Meriwether of Clarksville, TN, and his grandparents Hilda C. Trice and John Meriwether, and Ernest and Lucille Johnson were also an important part of his life.
Preceded in death by his mother Virginia, grandparents Hilda Trice and John Meriwether, Ernest and Lucille Johnson, uncles Frank and John Meriwether, Jr., aunts Phyllis Bush and Dorothy Richardson.
Troy is survived by his father Ernest Johnson (Jan), four children, Deonte, Key-Choina, Tiara, and Marlon, and two grandchildren, Emina and Key-Oliss Major, as well as his three siblings, Hoseau Cabell (Pamela), Tracy Hardin (Everett), and Tequa Meriwether, and his ex-wife Deann McCray.
Troy graduated from Bosse High School and worked as a coal miner at Peabody Coal in Dugger, Indiana, where he was known for his hard work and dedication. His passions included cooking and catering. He enjoyed preparing food for his family and friends and was known for his delicious dishes. He also had a passion for classic cars and enjoyed playing pool. In his youth, he worked in his family business at the Johnson Key Market in the Historic Baptisttown Neighborhood. Troy had a long battle against pulmonary sarcoidosis. Despite his illness, he remained strong and was an inspiration to many. Troy always remained positive and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Troy was raised in the Jehovah’s Witness tradition and attended Zion Baptist Church. He will be remembered as a kind, caring, and loving person who was full of laughter and life. Troy Meriwether will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. Thanks to family, friends, and hospital staff. May he rest in peace.
