He graduated from Richland High School in Virginia and enlisted in the US Army. He served an 8 month tour in Da Nang during the Vietnam War. After coming home, he remained in the Army National Guard where he was stationed in Fort Campbell, KY.
Sam retired from Popham Construction where he worked for many years. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson with friends. He was an IU basketball and Indianapolis Colts fan. He loved NASCAR racing, especially #24 Jeff Gordon.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Doris Byrd; and brother, Delmer Byrd.
He is survived by his son, Brent Byrd (Lauren); daughter, Brittney Byrd (Curtis); grandchildren, Cameron Byrd, Caiden Byrd, and Brinkley Byrd; sister, Connie Van Dyke; brothers, Elmer, Jack, Kenny, Leslie and Robert Byrd; as well as many nieces and nephews.
The Vanderburgh County Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct a military service at Noon Saturday, March 12, 2022 at Alexander North Chapel, 4200 Stringtown Road, Evansville, IN. Visitation will be held for family and friends after the military service until 3:00 p.m. Saturday at Alexander North Chapel.
