Richard “Dick” Lowell Meyer, 86, of Evansville, Indiana, went to be with his Savior on Thursday, August 17, 2023.
Richard was born on May 17, 1937, in Marysville, Kansas, to the Rev. Otto Meyer and Loide (Ambrosius) Meyer. He attended high school at St. John’s College in Winfield, Kansas, to prepare for his studies at Concordia Lutheran Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. During his first year at the seminary, Richard felt his true calling was to teach young students. He completed his bachelor’s degree in education from Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska, and his master's degree in education from the University of Evansville.
Richard was a teacher and athletic coach at St. Paul’s Lutheran School before becoming the 6th grade teacher and coach at the newly consolidated Evansville Lutheran School in 1971. He later taught English Language Arts at Holton Middle School and Lowe’s Grove Middle School in Durham, North Carolina, until he retired in 1997.
Richard not only enjoyed teaching his students in the classroom, but also loved coaching them in multiple sports. He was a gifted athlete and fan of all sports, and frequently attended local high school and college football and basketball games. Richard is also well-remembered for his sense of humor, especially his ability to find a corny joke in any situation. He loved spending time reading, working many types of puzzles and spending time with friends. Richard attended Howell General Baptist Church in Evansville prior to his death.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Lois McMillan; brother, Ronald Meyer; and Brenda Jobe, for whom he was caregiver.
He is survived by his daughters, Dana Meyer and Michelle “Shelley” (Tad) Sylivant.
At Richard’s request, he will be cremated and entombed at the Alexander Memorial Park Cemetery. No public services will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Richard Meyer’s memory may be made to The Evansville Rescue Mission, 500 E. Walnut St., Evansville, IN 47713; evansvillerescuemission.org.
