Melvin Edward Capps, age 87 passed away on Thursday, July 6, 2023. He was born on June 17, 1936 in Belle Rive, Illinois to the late Marion A. and Amanda K. (Beatey) Capps.
After graduating high school he joined the Army in January of 1957 and served as a Pole Lineman stationed in Germany until November of 1959. He was a decorated Marksman and sharpshooter. After returning to Evansville, he worked at Whirlpool for 34 years and retired in 1996. Mel enjoyed fishing and never met a fish he couldn't catch. He also enjoyed making fishing nets by hand.
Mel is survived by his daughter, Jennifer (Ben) Gahagan; sons, Jerry (Linda) Dennis, David (Leanne) Dennis, Randolph Dennis; daughters, Jamie Lohman; many grandchildren; many great grandchildren; one brother, Marvin "Pete" Capps; and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Inez Gwendoline (Hall) Capps; siblings, George, Norman, Pansie and Ruie.
Family and friends may gather for a visitation at Alexander East Chapel from 10:00 am to Noon on Friday, July 14, 2023. Funeral services will follow the visitation at noon. Final resting place will be next to his wife at Alexander Memorial Park following the services.
