James “Jim” Courtland Sturgeon, 97, of Evansville, passed away Monday, February 20, 2012, at VNA Charlier Hospice Center. He was born April 24, 1914, in Beech Grove, KY.
He was a 64 year member of the Sheet Metal Local 20 Union and retired from George Koch & Sons in 1978. He was a WWII Army Veteran and a member of St. Lucas United Church of Christ. He loved to work in his yard and plant a garden, which he did until the spring of 2011. Jim still drove a car and would go to the Carousel Restaurant and Hardee’s to visit with his friends and shopping at Wal-Mart.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Julia “Judy” Houghland Sturgeon, on January 26, 1994; four brothers; and one sister.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Emma Hood (James); grandchildren, Amy Turnpough (Scott), Jim Hood (Kristin) and Karen Myers (Toby); six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be 11:00 AM Friday, February 24, 2012, at Alexander East Chapel, officiated by Rev. Lynn Martin, with burial in Park Lawn Cemetery. Friends may visit Thursday from 3:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
