Carolyn Davis McCleary was born in Equality, Illinois on December 17, 1920. She graduated from IU and remained an avid basketball fan throughout her 96 years. On June 20, 1943 she married Gilbert McCleary and together they had many adventures- traveling, boating, and running McCleary Coach Lines. Her stories of life during the flood of 1937, the Great Depression, WWII, and a trip to Mt. Everest demonstrated her strength of spirit and daring nature. She truly had a life well lived. She remained with the love of her life, Gilbert, and was his caregiver until his death in 2009. She was a teacher, PTA President, Christian Education Board of Presbyterian USA elected member, as well as holding many local and State wide positions in the Presbyterian church. Along with her community services she provided constant family support and guidance. She loved to garden and her bountiful azaleas have been a show for the north side for decades.
She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth C. Davis (David Gehlhausen); son, Craig D. McCleary (Carolyn L.); nephew, David Wenner; grandchildren, Garrett Gehlhausen, Lisa Heichelbech (Jon), Arin Gehlhausen (Jenny), Douglas McCleary, Brad McCleary (Jeannie); and 6 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank her caregiver, Darlene, for her support which allowed Carolyn to remain in her beloved home.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, January 5, 2017, at Alexander North Chapel, 4200 Stringtown Road.
