Marilyn was born May 23, 1930 in Kansas City, Missouri to Frederick and Elizabeth Vingers.
The family soon moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where she spent her childhood and teen years. It was there she met her future husband.
At the University of Nebraska Marilyn distinguished herself as one of 12 coeds selected to be a Mortar Board, an honorary society based on Leadership, Scholarship and Service. She was a member of Delta Gamma sorority and was an Ak-Sar-Ben princess. She graduated from NU early in order to immediately begin teaching high school.
In 1953 she married the love of her life, David Hampton Cloyd. They settled in Escondido California.
Among Marilyn’s many contributions to the community, Marilyn served on the board of the Escondido Union School District and led many community service organizations, including Palomar-Pomerado Health Foundation, Palomar Family Counseling Services, parent groups for both the junior high and high school, and the Women's Guild at Trinity Episcopal Church. She was also a member of the Rotary Club. Above all she was devoted to her large family, who will treasure her love and wisdom always.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, David Hampton Cloyd, and a sister, Joan Vingers Williams. She is survived by a sister, Carol Vingers Rowe of Omaha, and four children: Dr. David Cloyd (Maxine) of Escondido, Tracey Shultz (Guy) of Escondido, John Cloyd (Susan) of Denver, and Pamela Cloyd (Patrick) of the Netherlands, 13 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 6, 2024 in the chapel at McLeod Mortuary, 1919 East Valley Parkway, Escondido.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Elizabeth Hospice, Palomar Family Counseling Services, or the charity of choice.
