She was born on September 25th, 1934 in Saint Nicholas, Michigan to Jules Van Damme and Clara (Vertriest) Van Damme. Her childhood was spent on her family’s rural Michigan farm with her parents and brothers. Mary graduated Michigan State University with a Home Economics degree and went to work at an Upper Michigan extension office. There she was set up on a blind date, met, fell in love and married her husband, Hubert, of over 50 years. They traveled the country following his work and eventually settled permanently in the Pacific Northwest, for a while in the Seattle area and then moving to Ellensburg to farm and for the remainder of her life. She was very active in her church, prayer group, community, family and 4-H.
Mary is survived by her husband Hubert, daughter Mary (Martin), grandson Isaac; son Joe (Monique), former daughter in law Kristine Tobin-Kubitz, grandson Kyle; son Mike, former daughter in law Kim Zechmeir, grandchildren Emilie & Ethan, former daughter in law Charity, grandson Patrick; and her brother Paul Van Damme of Michigan.
Funeral services will be on Monday, November 9th, at Saint Andrews Catholic Church. Viewing will be held at 10am. A funeral mass will be said at 11am followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery. There will be a reception following the burial back at Saint Andrews Church hall. Also, there will be a rosary service held on Sunday, November 8th, at 6:30pm at Saint Andrews Church.
