It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard James Hage, Sr. “Pop Pop”, who departed this life on October 6, 2024. Richard was a beloved husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, known for his vibrant spirit and zest for life.
Born on November 23, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois. Richard dedicated his life to the joy of his family and the simple pleasures that brought him happiness. He was married to his cherished wife, Darlene Ruth Hage (nee Voorhese) for 45 years until her passing in 2015, and their enduring love remained a guiding light in his life.
Richard’s greatest joy was spending time with his family, particularly during the holidays when he cherished the warmth and togetherness they shared. He was a devoted grandfather to his grandson, Austin Michael “Bun Bun”, who was truly the apple of his eye. Richard spent countless hours at the baseball field, cheering on Austin as he practiced and played, sharing in his passion for the game. Their bond was unbreakable, with laughter and countless memories that will forever warm the hearts of those who knew him.
An avid sports fan, Richard enjoyed watching the Baltimore and Chicago sports teams, often gathering with family and friends to celebrate their victories and lament their losses. He also found delight in rounds of golf, where he enjoyed playing with lifelong friends of 50 years, who fondly called him “Haji”.
Richard had a love for adventure, soaring through the treetops on zip lines to trips with family to Disney, where he embraced the magic of childhood alongside his family. He also enjoyed relaxing with a cold beer, sharing laughter and stories with those he loved.
Richard had a remarkable career that began with his service in the Air Force and he dedicated 34 years to the Department of Defense before retiring. As an intelligence analyst and reporter, he played a pivotal role in shaping our national security strategies and critical insights during his tenure
Richard was predeceased by his parents, George Hage and Lillian Laporta, and his beloved wife, Darlene Hage. He is survived by his devoted son Richard James Hage, Jr., father-in-law of Tricia Hage and his cherished grandson, Austin Michael Hage; dear brother-in-law of Vivian Gennett and Karl Voorhese. Richard is also survived by many brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
