Mary Elizabeth Burke, age 87, of Elkridge, Maryland passed away suddenly on Tuesday, August 29, 2023. A lifelong resident of Elkridge, Mary was born on April 29, 1936 to parents, Claude E., Sr. and Mary E. Hildebrand (nee Winstead); Beloved wife of the late Jack O. Burke Sr.; Loving mother of the late Jack O. Burke Jr. (Frances H. Burke), Susan Burke Harrison, and David A. Burke, Sr. (Kathleen T. Burke); Cherished grandmother of David A. Burke, Jr. (April Burke), the late Benjamin Burke Harrison, Kathryn C. N. Burke, Michael E. Burke (Abigail Burke), Meghan E. McCulloch (Sean McCulloch), Diana M. Burke, Ashley E.B. Carroll (Samuel Carroll), and Christina K. Pettit (Brian Pettit); and great-grandmother of Kirsten, Molly, Michael, Matthew, Mason, Nathan, Joshua, Emily, Evan, Amelia, Baker, Chase, and Jack; Dear sister of the late Claude E. “Sonny” Hildebrand, Jr.
Mary had an insatiable appetite for knowledge and learning and she found adventure in both the mundane and extraordinary facets of life. She loved to travel and explore and happily went wherever she was welcome. She made friends at every stop along the way, but was most joyful spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved attending water aerobics classes with her friends at the YMCA, which kept her active and fit, and would gladly enjoy oysters on the half shell and Maryland crabs at any opportunity. Mary had a love of music and sang joyously for years as a member of the Howard County Interfaith Choir and was the long-time director of the Melville Chapel United Methodist church choir.
A Visitation for Mary will be held at the Gary L. Kaufman Funeral Home at Meadowridge Memorial Park, 7250 Washington Blvd., Elkridge, MD 21075 on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. A Funeral Service will be held at the Melville United Methodist Church, 5660 Furnace Avenue, Elkridge, MD 21075 on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, 11:00 AM. Interment Meadowridge Memorial Park and reception to follow at Melville Chapel Fellowship Hall.
