She was born August 13, 1934 in Barbourville, Kentucky to Allen and Ellen Lawson Smith. Mrs. Garland was a graduate of Union College with a Master's and Rank 1 in Education. She began her teaching career in a one room school in 1955 in Knox County. She retired from teaching after 53 years and spent the last ten years volunteering at Hardin Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Garland was a faithful member of Elizabethtown Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband Floyd Garland; her parents, Allen and Ella Lawson Smith and seven sisters, Molly Partin, Goldie Brock, Virgie Broughton, Linda Wagers, Etta Jackson, Hazel Jackson and Della Owens.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ella McElroy; four grandchildren, Travis (Sarah) McMillen, Gary (Kameron) McMillen, Jr., Christina (Kenny) McGee and Stephanie Jackson; eight great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Brown Funeral Home with Dr. Glenn Chasteen officiating.
Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Allen-Smith Family Cemetery in Barbourville, KY.
Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
