Francis Raeburn Mattingly was born on September 7, 1931, in Rineyville to Joseph Guy and Virginia Pate Mattingly. A 1949 graduate of Rineyville High School, he married Nellie Catherine Howlett of Louisville on September 5, 1953. After four years of service in the in U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, they moved to Louisville where he began a career in insurance and raised his family. They eventually moved to Rineyville where he retired after 36 years from American General Life Insurance (formerly National Life & Accident Insurance). He was a devoted husband and father. In retirement his hobbies included his garden, grape arbor, fruit trees and grandchildren.
A devout Catholic, he was an active and dedicated member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
Raeburn was preceded in death by his parents; son, Rae Mattingly, Jr.; daughter, Susan Mary Mattingly; grandchildren, Cory and Jenna Ruley; great-granddaughter, Courtney Mattingly; and siblings, Joseph Guy Mattingly, Jr., Aubin Mattingly and Nada Howell.
Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Nellie and their children; Scott (Pam) Mattingly of Rineyville, Carol (Tim) Jenkins of Louisville, Wade (Tammy) Mattingly of Albuquerque, NM, Todd (Donna) Mattingly of Manton, Peggy (Tim) Donahue of Elizabethtown, Mona Mattingly of Leitchfield and Karen (Pat) Appelman of Fayetteville, NC; twenty-three grandchildren, Jason Mattingly, Laura Strate, Julie Downs, Joshua Mattingly, Mark Jenkins, Sarah Mattingly, Jessie Taylor, Joey Mattingly, Stephanie Allen, Robert Mattingly, Michael Mattingly, Jeremy Mattingly, Susan Skaggs, Steven Jenkins, Adam Mattingly, Brian Donahue, Jackie Higdon, Brandy Hambrick, Jamie Chaney, Paige Cogan, Samantha Parker, Paula Barnes, Catherine Appelman; thirty-seven great-grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, several step grandchildren; and sisters, Winona Skees and Diane (Oren) Dulaney.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am Friday, November 29 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 657 St. John Church Road, Elizabethtown.
All are welcome to celebrate Raeburn’s life following the service in the Church Community Building.
