He was born July 27, 1932, son of the late Rafael & Donaciana Garcia. Victor is survived by his daughters Adelita Garcia, Monica Garcia-O'Kane (Thomas W. O’Kane, Jr.) his son Victor E. Garcia, Jr., & his brother Rafael Garcia. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, extended family, & friends.
Victor served in the United States Marine Corps from December 29, 1947-1951. He graduated from Boot Camp at MCRD–San Diego & attended Infantry Training School in Camp Pendleton, CA. He was stationed in Alaska, Pearl Harbor & Korea. Prior to the Korean War, Victor performed as a field musician (trumpeter) in the 1st Division Band where one of his highest honors was playing for President Truman. He was deployed to Korea prior to the conflict where he later served as an Infantry Marine with the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment. During his tenure, he received numerous commendations/medals to include the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat, the Presidential Unit Citation Medal with 4 stars, the Korean Service Medal with 4 Battle Stars & the Korean Presidential Unit Citation Medal. He will be most remembered for his valiant efforts during the Battle of the “Chosen Reservoir” which became known as the “Frozen Chosen”.
After his active-duty service, Victor became a member of the United States Marine Reserve in El Paso, Texas with the “19th Rifle Company” where he served two more years.
He later enlisted in the United States Army where he served from 1955-1965 & was assigned to various posts including Drill Sergeant in Ft. Chaffee, Arkansas, Infantry Platoon Sergeant in Ft. Hood, Texas, & in Hawaii. Victor finished his tour with “C” Company, 1st Battle Group, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Division after conducting reconnaissance & patrol missions in Thailand.
He completed his military career while serving in the United States Navy from 1966-1974. Victor trained as a Gunners-Mate & was also assigned to Special Services.
Education was very important to him. After retiring from the military, Victor received his Child Phycology & Accounting Degrees. After these degrees, he was awarded an honorary High School Diploma from Bowie High School, due to his dedication to the military which deferred his High School education.
Victor served his community for over 50 years in various positions, up to Commander of the “Original” Young Marines & Jr. Devil Dogs of El Paso, Texas. This was his most rewarding endeavor, changing the lives of thousands of youngsters for the better. Most everyone in our community has heard of, known about, or been a member of the Young Marines or Jr. Devil Dogs.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 1, 2022, from 4-8pm with Prayer Service at 6:30pm @ Hillcrest Funeral Home, 1060 N. Carolina. Graveside Service will be held Wednesday, November 2, 2022, at 11am @ Ft. Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson where he will be laid to rest with Military Honors.
He will be remembered as a Patriot who believed in God, Country, Family & Corps.
