Steven Joe Slape passed away Sunday, Feb. 13, 2022 in El Paso. Steve was born on Oct. 1, 1961 in El Paso, attended Newman and Fannin elementaries and graduated from Andress HS in 1979. Steve married Vina Donathan in June, 1986 and Chaparral, NM became their home. Steve was soon interested in the fact Chaparral didn't really have viable fire stations and his legacy more or less started. During his off-hours from work, Steve decided to knock door to door to find prospects for recruitment of volunteer firemen. From that point, Steve was in charge of every aspect of getting two fire stations, one in both counties, not only built but fully manned and equipped. He acted as chief for a time and has been retired for a few years now.
Steve was currently with El Paso Water Utilities and about to start his 7th year; he was previously with Phelps Dodge. Shortly, after high school, Steve worked a number of years in the Midland/Odessa/Kermit oil & gas boom of that time. Except for those years, Steve lived the entirety of his life in El Paso and Chaparral.
Steve is survived by his wife, Vina Slape; daughters, Stefanie (Isaac) Villarreal and Lakota Slape; eight grandchildren; mother, Linda Slape; brothers, Greg (Audrey) Slape and life-long brother Victor Carrillo; uncle, Bob (Bevvie) Flamm; father and mother-in-law, Jovan and Calvena Donathan; numerous brother and sisters in law, niece and nephews, cousins and so many great & valued friends. Steve was preceded in death by his father, Joe W. Slape; grandparents, Hookie/Oba and Winnie Slape and Fred and Marie Flamm; uncles Fred and Pat\Lonnie Slape and numerous other loved family members and friends.
The family requests charitable donations of your choice in lieu of flowers. Steve himself had donated hair to the cancer society several times. Honoring Steve's wishes, there will be a Celebration of Life at 10605 Tiber Place on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2022 at 2pm.
