Reymundo F. Gonzalez (Ray) of El Paso, Texas, formerly of San Elizario, Texas, passed away peacefully in the early morning of September 8, 2015. Ray, who was 93 years old, is survived by his wife of 61 years, Neima and their five children: Alex Gonzalez, Estela Alvarez, Martin Gonzalez, Ana Maria Garcia and Fernando Gonzalez. He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren: Ray, Renee, Melissa, Judy, Steven, Daniel, Cynthia, Joseph, Adan and Xian and 2 great-grandchildren: Amaya and Ariana. Ray was a proud Veteran of World War II, fighting in the European Theater with the men of Company A in the 406th Infantry. During battle, Ray was captured by Axis troops and incarcerated in a POW camp. At the end of the war, Ray was honorably discharge and returned to the El Paso area where he resumed his passion for sports, especially baseball and softball both as a player (1949 Fast Pitch World Championship) and as an umpire. Ray was a loyal, dedicated meat cutter and manager for Furr’s grocery chain for 38 years. Visitation will be at Hillcrest Funeral Home-Carolina from 5:00 to 9:00 pm on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 with a Rosary at 7:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be at 9:30 am on Thursday, September 17, 2015 at Our Lady of the Valley Church (8600 Winchester Rd.) Interment will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery at 11:15 am with full Military Honors. Service under the direction of Hillcrest Funeral Home 1060 Carolina 598-3332.
