Mel Lyons was born October 29, 1929, in Clebit, OK. He attended Arizona State University where he played baseball, then attended Parkland Hospital School of X-ray in Dallas, TX where he later taught. He served in the US Army and the reserves. He received his BBA from Texas Western College in El Paso and MS in Hospital Administration from Northwestern University in Chicago. He was administrator for a group of doctors, later named Radiology and Pathology Consultants 1959-1976, He served as administrator of Hillcrest General Hospital of Silver City, NM 1976-1980 and business administrator of El Paso Cancer Treatment Center 1980-1991.
Mel was a longtime member and deacon of First Baptist Church El Paso; his deep faith was evident in everything he did. He loved to participate in sports: hunting, fishing, baseball, tennis, golf, boating, and handball. Family was his joy and he loved to tease and laugh with them often. Over the years he served on several boards including NM State Board for Hospital Administration, Christian Home for Boys and Girls, various hospital boards, YMCA, and was an officer in the El Paso Rotary Club. He was preceded in death by his mother Grace Lyons , father Truman Lyons, sister Mary Bratcher and wife of 52 years of marriage, Mary Lyons . He is survived by daughters Cathy Bacchus (husband Rocky) of El Paso, Nancy Hennig (husband Tim) of Raymore, MO, grandchildren Eric Hennig (Cheri), Andrew Hennig (Casey), Nicole Roldan (Enrique), and Kristin Bacchus. Also survived by beloved great grandchildren Brenna McDowell, Nicolas Roldan, Julieta Roldan, Logan Hennig, Caris Hennig, and Beckett Hennig.
